The harvest festival of Kerala, which is celebrated in the month of Chingam in the Malayalam calendar which usually falls around mid August to mid September is a ten day long festival celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm.  The people of Kerala were led by their beloved ruler, King Maveli and it is believed that every year, Maveli visits Kerala to bestow his blessings among the people and hence, Malayalis all over the world celebrate this festival to commemorate his return and organize events and decorate their houses to welcome him.

The celebrations during this time are of various types. Some of them are:
The infamous Onasadya, a feast served on a banana leaf with over 25 dishes with 3 different payasams (sweet dish). It is a grand meal that is loved by all. Pookalam, as to give a grand welcome to Maveli, houses are adorned with flower decorations at their entrance. Snake Boat race or Vallam Kali and Thiruvaathirakali is a unique dance performed by small groups of women in circles.
